Sociology Course Expectations
Course Content: Sociology is the science that studies human society and social behavior. Modern sociology is devoted to examining the ways in which social structures and institutions influence society. This course will serve as an introduction to the study of sociology. Various topics will be covered including social structure, cultural diversity, social stratification, gender, socialization, and crime
Course Requirements: Throughout the duration of this course, students will be expected to be attentive, active participants in class discussions, group projects, debates, etc. In addition, students will be required to write and take notes daily. Students are required to come to class with all necessary materials each day (pencil/pen, books, homework).
Homework: Students will be assigned homework on a regular basis. Unless otherwise specified, assignments are due at the beginning of class. Late assignments will not be accepted. In the event of an absence, students will be given two days to make up work for every one day of absence. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the missed assignments. Long term assignments and group assignments must be turned in on the due date whether or not the student is in class on that day.
Grading System: Points will be given to students for each completed assignment. Point totals will vary depending on the difficulty of the assignment and amount of preparation required. Students will also be graded on class participation. Computer tabulated grades will be posted regularly. In computing final trimester grades, 80% will be the grade earned from completed class assignments and tests. The remaining 20% will be the final exam grade. Students can exempt from the exam if they qualify. The grading scale is as follows:
100%-94%=A 76%-74%=C
93%-90%=A- 73%-70%=C-
89%-87%=B+ 69%-67%=D+
86%-84%=B 66%-64%=D
83%-80%=B- 63%-60%=D-
79%-77%=C+ 59%-0%=E
Attendance: Regular attendance is critical to the learning process. Students are expected to attend class daily. Seven or more absences may result in loss of credit. (See Attendance Policy in Student Handbook) In addition, tardiness will not be tolerated. Each tardy beyond the first will earn the student a detention.
