COURSE DESCRIPTION-
SCI-FI / HI-FI is a twelve-week elective class open to 9th-12th graders. Students are responsible for reading at least 600 pages of science fiction and 600 pages of historical fiction before the end of the 12-week trimester. You can see this averages 100 pages per week. Two or three days per week will be dedicated solely to in-class reading. Choice is an important component of class; students choose their own novels and then complete the bi-weekly projects.
We will also study SCI-FI/HI-FI television shows and movies, recognize the subgenres of science-fiction and draw comparisons between them, and analyze how sci-fi content is directly shaped by the times. ( For example, 1950's alien invasion movies coinciding with the Space Race)
OUR ROUTINE-
Every other Monday we'll spend the first half of class in the library either returning, renewing, checking out novels, or completing research or projects on the computers. Book projects will be due every other Monday as well; return to this site for the requirements and due dates. We will have five of them, each worth 100 pts.
Every other Monday, and every Tuesday and Wednesday are reading days. The time will be used strictly for reading and working on the current project.
Thursday and Fridays are presentation days. Partners will teach one lesson this trimester about an influential SCI-FI movie.
