Library Information Skills, a one credit class, combines working in the WLHS Library Information Center (LIC)  with learning information and technology skills.  

Content: 
>Fundamentals of working in a service occupation   
>Computerized circulation of library materials
>Dewey Decimal System
>Processing/shelving library materials
>Advanced knowledge of the electronic catalog
>Application of Microsoft Office software programs
>Troubleshooting technology issues
>Basics of Copyright Law as it applies to library service
>Confidentiality of library records
>Internet as a research tool 
>Use of:
-Online databases
-Copy machine and scanner
-Internet as a research tool
-E-books
Students taking Library Information Skills for a second trimester continue their support of the LIC. Basic information and technology skills are reinforced and expanded to include:  
-Advanced Internet and database searching techniques
-Materials selection methods
-Book and website list development to support user needs
Goals:
>Improve communication skills by working with students and faculty as customers
>Learn the importance of good attendance in a work situation
>Learn readers’ advisory skills and apply these skills to help students select books
>Learn to ethically and efficiently use the technology in  a Library Media Center
>Improve research skills
>Learn procedures and policies typical to a Library Information Center
Expectations:
>Contribute to management of the library
>Perform routine responsibilities without being asked 
>Keep on task
>Pay attention to detail
>Speak to everyone who enters the LIC
>Do not let anyone go away without being helped
>Keep assigned shelving area in proper Dewey Decimal order
>Do a weekly SCAN shelf check and face off shelves
Assignments:
The Student Library Assistants position requires each student to work throughout each class hour.   Assignments outside of class time are rare.
